Respect for life

Like many, I was shocked to hear about the Wal-Mart employee trampled to death by a throng of shoppers anxious to get to their 'black Friday' deals when the store opened. Even more shocking was the reports of how many of them complained bitterly when it was announced that the store was closing due to the death. Hopefully, with the aid of the store security cameras, those responsible will be quickly brought to justice.

When you get right down to it, however, is this kind of behavior really THAT surprising today? How many people today that are appalled by the actions at the Wal-Mart are equally appalled by the fact that over 48 MILLION abortions have been performed since Roe Vs. Wade? How many had the same reaction to the Terri Schiavo case, and the fact that OUR courts allowed someone to be starved to death for the convenience of another? How many care that in two of our states, assisted suicide is now legal?

I would argue that as human life becomes less and less respected in our culture, that incidents such as what happened at this Wal-Mart will only become more commonplace, and less shocking to many.

I fear that too many conservatives today are too quick to put pro-life issues on the back burner. Some seem almost embarrased to hold or express this view. In my opinion, this issue goes to the core of conservative beliefs, and should be held higher than any other, and NEVER compromised on. As conservatives, we place great value in, and are quick to express our support for individual liberty. What can possibly be a bigger violation of such liberty than the legally sanctioned taking of an INNOCENT human life?

The fewer of us there are to take a strong stand on such issues, the quicker we will continue down the slippery slope we are currently on, which will lead to a future where, I fear, a life's value is ONLY judged by its usefullness or convenience to others.

IF were not already there......

Awesome post. I'll tell you this though I don't trust the government to tell me what to do with my body. Something about that reeks of... SOCIALISM?

I REALLY do not understand this argument, yet it seems to be a favorite of the "Pro Choice" crowd...I am a conservative, but I EXPECT my government to protect life and liberty...EXACTLY as the founders intended. Conservatives have NO PROBLEM with government as long as it stays within its constitutionally defined boundaries. I would consider protecting life well within these boundaries. How on earth can this be defined as socialism?

I also really hate it when I hear people say that pro-life people are 'telling people what to do with their bodies.' Did anyone tell these mothers what to do with their bodies when they CHOSE to use them and get pregnant? Once they ARE pregnant, they are NO LONGER one body, but two, and society should protect both equally.

When I make arguments such as this, the next statement is almost inevitably "What about rape, incest, etc., the mother did not make a 'choice' then..'...This is where I WILL differ with other pro-life conservatives, but I personally feel these are NOT valid reasons for the taking of a life. I feel that we can not possibly make the argument that all life is sacred, then turn around and say that because a life was created due to a very terrible situation, that this somehow justifies killing it....

If you use the 'dont tell me what to do with my body' argument, you could probably make it about ANY voluntary killing that happens in this country. Where do you draw the line? A life is a life, no matter what stage, and deserves protection.

Well...I guess you can call me a murder then because like I said I knew when I told the doctor to take out the tube in my father that he was not doing to make it. In fact I was there the moment he died and may have helped "guide him into that good night" by turning down the canned landscape videos with symphonic music blaring in his face.
How guilty should I feel for that? Do I ask forgiveness? I've done neither.
And if you really want to stop, or at least slow down, abortion, plus your not afraid of a bit of government proactivism, why not every unmarried man be given a vasectomy, they are harmless and reversible upon marriage?

I am really sorry to hear about what happened with your father. I would definitely never want to have to be in that situation. I obviously do not know your entire situation, but I would never call you a 'murderer'.

When it comes to ABORTION however, I will be blunt. If you are a mother and have your unborn child aborted, if you are a father who goes along with this decision, if you are the 'doctor' who performs the abortion, or even a nurse who helps with the procedure, then you have taken or participated in the taking of an innocent life, which IS murder, in my mind.

There is nothing that can justify to me the taking of this MOST innocent of life. Life begins at conception. Even a lot of rabid pro-choice advocates do not try to argue this point anymore. If life does NOT begin at conception, then tell me, where else could it possibly begin? If this is a life, then does it not deserve the same protections as any other? How can allowing it to be killed FOR MONEY & for the 'convenience' of someone else EVER be justified?

Your last point is frankly ridiculous, and would go against everything I believe as a conservative about personal liberty. I also believe in PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, however, which kind of returns to the original point I was making with this post...Too few people have the respect for life that is needed to feel this sense of responsibility when they create it.
